The project links with other key sustainable elements of downtown Indianapolis, and is adjacent to the dynamic “Cultural Trail” and has options for bike sharing, car sharing, electric vehicle charging, and other green modes of transportation. It carefully integrates stormwater run-off into a green catch basin system that supports on-site vegetation.

  • CSI Indy May Program: The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center at the Indianapolis Zoo: Designing for Two Species
    May 21, 2015
    Willows on Westfield
    6729 East Westfield Blvd.
    Indianapolis, IN

“The program focuses on the idea of designing a facility that is optimized for two species. Our buildings are always designed for people. But what does it mean to design for people but also to design for a different - but nevertheless sentient and highly intelligent - species. We'll also talk about what the facility means culturally for Indianapolis.” - Dan Overbey

The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center at the Indianapolis Zoo, a 17,500-square foot exhibition and conservation center for orangutans, is one the most innovative zoo exhibits in the world. The exhibit was specifically designed to meet the physical, social, and intellectual needs of the species, honoring the client’s wish to establish the most technologically and functionally advanced orangutan facility in the world.

Through state-of-the-art exhibits and interactive computer games, visitors are offered an unprecedented intimate level of interaction with one of the planet’s most endangered primates. A landmark project in the arena of animal husbandry, the facility affords its occupants the freedom to travel in and around the exhibit building with greater mobility than the human visitors. The facility allows its unique inhabitants to ascend a 75-foot tall climate-controlled interior viewing space, access two outdoor yards, and freely traverse and nest about an outdoor network of masts, cables and platforms – collectively referred to as the Hutan Trail. The iconic 150-foot tall “Beacon of Hope” serves as a reminder and catalyst of dialog related to the species’ endangerment and the zoo’s ongoing conservation efforts.

  • CSI Indy January Chapter Program: The ADA Quiz
    January 21, 2016
    Willows on Westfield
    6729 East Westfield Blvd.
    Indianapolis, IN

So you think you know the ADA? Or even if you don’t, please join the discussion in this interactive presentation to test your knowledge of subjects related to accessibility, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ICC/ANSI A117.1. The ADA has been around for over 25 years, yet there is still much confusion and misinformation in the industry on exactly what the requirements are, when those requirements apply and even which document or standard should be referenced to find the answer. With the primary enforcement of ADA being legal action brought by those who feel they have been discriminated against, facility owners and managers, architects, designers and construction professional could all learn more about the details of the ADA and how to avoid its risks.

This presentation builds upon the first one ever given at the Indianapolis Chapter CSI meeting in April 2014. Since that time, this speaker has traveled the State and beyond, including to CONSTRUCT 2015 in St Louis, delivering and further developing this “Quiz” into a very informative discussion on accessibility topics.

  • CSI Indy February Chapter Program: RTKL to speak on 360 Market Tower
    February 18, 2016
    Willows on Westfield
    6729 East Westfield Blvd.
    Indianapolis, IN

This month is a joint meeting with the AIA Indianapolis. Thanks to the coordination of CSI member Pete Baker, RTKL will be speaking on 360 Market Square.

360 Market Square is sited on the northern end of the former Market Square Arena property. The building defines a formal street edge on all four sides of its site providing mingling and outdoor dining space for both shoppers and residents alike.

Through its organic allantoid shape inspired by natural precedents, it challenges currently accepted residential high rise stereotypes. Oriented with the short, curved side facing west for general energy conservation, the curved surfaces also result in a larger volume of building enclosed within less surface area, additionally yielding a material savings and reduced energy costs.

Offering 293 luxury apartments, a gourmet grocery store with added retail users, both public and private parking, and full-service residential amenities, the dynamic 27 story concrete and glass residential tower is enhanced through the use of varying glass colors to create a sense of visual weaving on the exterior façade.

Two large outdoor green roofs augment residential amenity spaces at both the intermediate terrace level, and also at the rooftop terrace located atop the residential tower. The latter is given prominence by its large ‘sky window’, framing views of downtown Indianapolis and the surrounding landscape beyond, while also serving to create an iconic new expression on the Indianapolis skyline.
